Ali,a high school boy loves to buy pizza from the local pizza hut but
When it comes to the range of burgers, he goes and buys it from McDonald's.
He then happily returns home, switches his wifi on and entertains himself with
newly uploaded hip hop music, the garbage cursingly called by his father as
Western cultural raid planned by Christians and Jews in order to make Muslims
Give up the teachings of their religion and become infidels.
Father is worried about Ali's clothing choice as he is fond of wearing shorties with sleeveless tops in summer reveling body parts supposed to be covered as the same is frowned upon by the societ they live in.
Ali's father however turns a blind eye to the same Internet facility while taking orders from customers sitting in other parts of the world regarding the manufacturing of garments including jeans, tops(sleeveless with priority) and neckers of different sizes . He often is made orders to manufacture blouses and under garments for ladies.
This is a typical Asian sub continental society's story. Here arises question as to why Ali's father is worried as well as happy to the effects of a phenomenon that is termed in the recent time as globalisation.
So what is globalisation?
Globalisation is the phenomenon based on the principle of letting an individual and or group of individuals in whatever form to be benefited from the services, products and resources in any and every part of world offered by other individual, group of individuals in form of profitable and or non profitable entities.
Answering the above questions in the given case, we can divide the phenomenon of globalisation in two different aspects.
Economic globalisation
Cultural globalisation
As far as the benefits and fruits of the economic aspect of globalisation is concerned, Ali's father is more than happy since he can see his local business of so called western garments booming day by day with the increasing order range of foreign customers.
The manufacture of a top, jeans and a lady blouse costs him in rupees but profits him in dollars, pounds, euros and other established foreign currencies.
This is quite natural of Ali's father to hail globalisation as the phenomenon lets him be benefited.
His worriness regarding Ali's clothing choice is actually the harm he is faced with and the toll is being taken by nothing else than the very phenomenon of globalisation.
If Ali's father local business is made profitable by the mutual trade agreements between his native country and foreign lands in order to let individuals like him and other limited companies to offer their services and products to any and every human being living on planet earth, why not KFC, McDonald's, gucci and the likes be permitted to take the benefits of the same phenomenon of globalisation?
Globalisation is a reality with its roses and pricks. .
It is cactus for some but jasmine for others. Some are cursing it while others are campaigning to strengthen it further.
It is unavoidable yet controllable.
The recent rioted demonstration held in Germany during g20 summit is a running episode of the same tug of war between the supporters and opponents of globalisation.
We need to understand that the phenomenon has tightly engulfed the diverse range of societies be it highly liberal like western societies or conservative like those of sub continent and middle east.
If on one side it is producing new business avenues for developing economies of the world it is helping world leading corporations carve their way to hire cheaper labour, manufacturing low cost products and making skyrocketing profits leaving the monstrous gap grow even monstrously between the one percent wealthiest and the ninety nine percent poorest.
Human rights groups must focus on awaring those badly hit by the harms of this ever growing phenomenon.
Workshops and educational programs need to be held aiming at the betterment of cheap labour hired by multinational corporations in under developed countries.
Labour in those feeble economies must know what is right and wrong in terms of offering their services against longer working hours in return to lesser pay.
They should be made aware of the opportunities waiting for them in developed economies of the world.
Every human has the right to work and be paid humanly.it is better for a native inhabitant to work and be paid in his own native land but with the same pay scale as in a developed country.
This principle can only be applied if the governments of developing and under developed countries, with the help of legislation and better diplomatic efforts, start making multinationals bound to pay their countrymen labour with as much pay as they have to pay labour in a developed country.
After the speedy improvement in the field of communication technology, globalisation is the gateway to the start of a newer world.
The impact of the phenomenon is deep, strong and unavoidable yet trimmable with the aim to
lessen the harms of the same inflicted on the weaker portions of the world with regard to their economies.
Humans with good conscience must step forward and do their part.
As far as the cultural aspect of globalisation is concerned, it is upto the choice of the people of the very land to let themselves adopt a foreign or their local culture.
Lifestyles aren't subject to forced and sudden changes.
The way a society behaves in terms of their clothing, choice of food, entertainment and asthetics nourishment entirely depends upon their realistic or non realistic approach towards the same.
West has proved itself to be more realistic than any other part of the world.
Their clothing, food, entertainment, rituals and asthetics are deeply rooted in their own very land and compatible with their basic living needs.
They don't seem to be wearing a kurta pajama (a sub continental dress)while meeting some foreign dignitary or to maintain the dress code mandatory for holding an official public or private post.
On the contrary, sub continental and to some extent in middle east the liking and fondness for a two or three piece western suit is enormous when it comes to official (public, private )meetings with local or foreign dignitaries.
The fondness for western dress (formal, informal)is trickled down into common masses as they psychologically feel superior wearing jeans, shirts and neckers since the same is portrayed by media and fashion people as cool and a symbol of status and of being well off.
This is what may be termed as the self hijack of oneself by something that has nothing to do with him or his environment and has not been imposed by the one who is being imitated.
This is an initiative based on complete self willingness to adopt a culture that is in total incompatibility with the weather, history, deep rooted customs and usages.
Sub continental nations as a matter of fact have been under British rule but not any more.
What makes them calling it the harm of globalisation in form of western culture is their own self pleasure they take while dressed up in the same western suits meeting foreign dignitaries and business delegations or enjoying high public posts, being termed as gazetted officers.
The pleasure is widely seen when it comes to urban rural lifestyle difference as the former is looked up by the later with awe and a desire to be a part of the same urban elite so that they can dress up the same way that has nothing to do with their land or lifestyle.
Ali's father worry is a self created monster that has no connection in the prevailing globalisation yet it is a wide expression of a society that is in no serious mood to live according to their actual needs with a realistic approach.
The gateway of globalisation is as open to sub continental culture to penetrate into other parts of world as it is accusedly helping western culture to dominate local cultures in different parts of world.
